A Stitch in Time

- an extract from 'Moon Walking' and the winner of Writer's Billboard Flash Fiction Competition May 2011.

Josif couldn’t find them anywhere.  When he’d come home at lunch time, he thought he’d put them on the chair next to his bed, just after he’d showed them to his grandmother, but they’d gone.  He’d only bought them this morning and he was really looking forward to wearing them tonight.  He was certain his new, fashion conscious girlfriend would be impressed by all the designer rips and tears, and the faded fabric.
    Perhaps his grandmother knew where they were.  She was always tidying up and putting things away.
    “Gran, have you seen my new Versace jeans?”
“Yes dear, but you should have checked more closely when you bought them.  They gave you someone else’s old ones.  But never mind dear, it’s taken me all afternoon, I’ve run out of thread and broken the needle on my sewing machine but I’ve managed to sew up all the holes for you.  Now they look as good as new.  I hope you’re pleased.”  She said smiling broadly.
